Ogham is a Celtic writing system and the first known written language of Ireland. Many Irish names make their first appearance in history on the Ogham stones.

The Ogham alphabet consists of a series of strokes along a line or across a line. Ogham is sometimes known as the ‘Celtic Tree alphabet’, as a number of the letters are linked to ancient Irish names or particular trees.

This alphabet was carved on to standing stones to commemorate particular people and the edge of the stone was used as the center line. Ogham normally reads from the left hand side, bottom up, across the top and down the other side.

There are Ogham stones scattered throughout Ireland with some particularly noteworthy ones in Adare, County Limerick; Aghadoe, Ardfert and Annascaul in County Kerry; Ardmore in County Waterford and across Galway, Roscommon, Wicklow, Cavan and many other counties.

This particular piece from Rings from Ireland is available in solid sterling silver with 10k yellow gold center and is 6.6mm in width in ladies and gents. It also features a Trinity Knot symbol.

This stunning ring will allow you to share a piece of Ireland’s history, as remarkably, nearly two thousand years later the ancient script is still in use.

Also available in white gold with yellow gold center and yellow gold with white gold center.
