Partition
When the treaty of 1921 happened, ending the War of Independence, the 26 counties became ‘the Irish Free State’ and subsequently the Republic of Ireland, while the six counties of Ulster were separated from the rest of Ireland becoming ‘Northern Ireland’ – a province of the UK.

Famine
