With its majestic crown, the Claddagh has always had a link to royalty and has many royal fans through the centuries. In 1849 Queen Victoria visited the west of Ireland and was gifted a Claddagh ring which she wore proudly. She kept the Irish tradition of wearing a Claddagh through generations as her son King Edward VII and his wife Queen Alexandra also wore Claddagh rings. And when the time came for their son King George V to be crowned, he also wore the Claddagh.

Many other famous royal and public figures also owned and wore the Claddagh as a tribute to their Irish roots, such as Princess Grace (née Kelly) of Monaco and president J.F.K, popularizing the Claddagh throughout the world.

The Claddagh can be used as a way of telling others where your heart lies.

  • If you wear a Claddagh on your right hand with the heart facing outwards it means that your heart is open to love.
  • If you wear the Claddagh on the right hand but this time with the tip of the heart facing towards the body it means that your heart has been captured by another.
  • By wearing the Claddagh on your left hand with the tip of the heart pointing out means that the wearer is engaged to be married.
  • Wearing the Claddagh on the left hand but with the heart facing in towards your own heart lets others know you are married.
