In early Celtic and Irish history, the Celtic knot had many traditions and meanings. The early Celts originally designed the knot so that each link represented a natural element such as earth, air and water. This knot had such importance that it was then adopted by the Christians who adapted its meaning to represent the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
